Tryst Review

from time to time there are games that surprise you, games that you play and think they are full of innovation, filled with great graphics and a gameplay mechanic that sets it apart from the rest of the competition. Tryst tries to be that game, however for me it fails in every department and after a few hours play I felt that it could be any number of average games.
Tryst is your typical RTS game, developed by BlueGiant Interactive it features the standard features of any RTS game. It has 8 player PvP, two unique races and an Augmentation Research Mechanism. The game features a long an exhaustive story mode, plus multiplayer which is standard for these types of games these days. You can choose to be either the Humans or the Aliens who are known as Zali’s, and depending on who you choose this will give you different abilities and styles of play.

The maps are filled with different hazards that impact on the strategy that you take while playing the game. Thanks to the games interesting Augmentation Research Mechanism though, you can equip your units with different load-outs and the computer will adapt them to your race’s advantages or disadvantages. It makes the game that bit easier, which is ideal for the casual player, and can make for some interesting gameplay. Level difficulties seem to be set right, so easy level is pretty easy, and the game does get progressively harder depending on which level you choose to play at.
Control of the game is quite straight forward, and everything seemed to be quite intuitive. Due to the screen’s layout, you are left in full of control of everything you see and do. In some ways I liked this about Tryst, it made me feel comfortable from the very beginning, and felt like a game that I had played numerous times. This of course is also a curse, as I didn’t find that Tryst really offered me anything that any number of other games had to offer.
Graphically the game is ok, just like the rest of the game it has nothing to impress. There are some nice lighting effects, and everything runs smoothly enough, there’s just no “wow” factor that you should get from games these days.Much has been made of the “Unigine” engine, and sadly, for me at least it was a bit of a let-down. It’s the times we live in now, where production values are set so high that we really notice mediocrity when we see it.The same can be said for the sound, it’s really nothing special, it does the job and that’s what it does.
Overall Tryst is one game among many. There are no points that I can make that will bring it out of mediocity, the graphics, sound and gameplay are all by-the-numbers, but that’s not to say that Tryst is a bad game. It’s not a bad game, it’s just a game that doesn’t stand out from the crowd. At it’s price-point though the game does play to its strengths and there are some great tactical and strategic moves in the game to be made. Stick with it and you’ll end up enjoying the game for what it is, and maybe you’ll forget about the other titles that the World of PC gaming has to offer.
